Project: Probabilistic and Neural Control Mechanisms in Robot Learning
The Institute for Robotics and Cognitive Systems at the University of Lübeck has an open PhD position in the area of robotics, control and neural networks. The PhD position is fully funded for 3 years with a monthly stipend of 1,600 EUR.
Robotics is a vastly growing field with enormous potential for autonomous intelligent assistants in everyday tasks. One of the major unsolved challenges however is to compute decisions and control signals in few milliseconds from a huge stream of uncertain sensory observations. The goal of this project is to develop novel probabilistic evidence integration and control algorithms based on neural networks. A key feature of the models is the ability to maintain and continuously update multiple action strategies for realtime control to quickly adapt to changing environmental conditions. The algorithms will be tested in challenging and exciting human robot interaction tasks for manipulation, grasping and navigation.

Requirements: Students (m/f) with a master’s degree (or equivalent) in computer science, mathematics, physics or engineering are invited to apply. A strong background in robotics, mathematics or machine learning is highly desirable. Excellent programming skills, analytical problem solving and organizational abilities are required.
Application details: The earliest starting date is February, 1st 2019 and the planned duration of the project is 3 years. A full application consists of: (1) a detailed CV, (2) a statement of motivation, (3) two letters of recommendation, (4) your master’s thesis as pdf, (5) all relevant degree certificates and grade transcripts: secondary school leaving certificate, Bachelor’s degree certificate, Master’s/Diploma degree certificate (please attach certified translations in German/English, if the original copies are in other languages). Previous publications (e.g. from MSc studies) are not required but will be considered in favour of the candidate. Please submit your application via email to Elmar Rueckert email@example.com.
